According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 9.5 square miles (24.5 km2), of which 8.8 square miles (22.9 km2) is land and 0.62 square miles (1.6 km2), or 6.59%, is water. Via the Rivanna River, Lake Monticello is part of the James River watershed.
